Queen makes a heartfelt promise on Commonwealth Day despite missing the ‘special occasion’
In her annual Commonwealth Day statement, the Queen reaffirmed a vow she made more than 70 years ago to devote her life to service.
The Queen stated in a message ahead of today’s event, “In this year of my Platinum Jubilee, it has given me joy to reiterate the commitment I made in 1947, that my life will always be devoted in service.”
The remark is reminiscent of a speech given by a young Princess Elizabeth on April 21, 1947, to commemorate her 21st birthday while on a trip of South Africa with her parents and younger sister Princess Margaret.

The little princess spoke on the radio from Cape Town.
“I declare before you all that my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong,” she said.
Her Majesty is the head of the Commonwealth, sometimes known as the “family of countries.” It has played a vital role throughout her reign, and she is particularly fond of the institution.
It was reported on Friday that Queen would not be attending the traditional Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey, but would instead be represented by the heir to the throne, Prince Charles.
She has, however, issued her annual Commonwealth Day address, in which she expresses her hope that the Commonwealth “remains an important force for good in our globe for many decades to come.”
“In this year of my Platinum Jubilee, it has given me the joy to reiterate the vow I made in 1947, that my life will always be devoted in service,” her yearly greeting says in full.
