Jim Carrey and Alicia Silverstone
When Alicia Silverstone was 19, Jim Carrey was accused of abusing her. While winning his Best Comedic Performance award at the 1997 MTV Movie Awards, the comedian, 60, kissed the then-teenage actress on the lips.
After slamming “sickening” Will Smith for slapping Chris Rock onstage at the Oscars on Sunday, Jim’s earlier actions have resurfaced online.
Jim approaches the stage to take the award from Alicia, who had presented it, for his role in Cable Guy. With both hands, he seized the Clueless actress’s face and kissed her on the lips.
They parted ways, and Alicia, took an awkward step to the side, her face shaken. Jim burped after reciting words from George Thorogood & The Destroyers’ Bad to the Bone song into the microphone during his speech.
He also tried to kiss Will, when he was revealed as the winner of the MTV Movie & TV Award for Best Kiss at the same awards presentation.
While making his way to the stage to receive his award, Will laughed and shoved Jim off.
Jim was dubbed a “hypocrite” and “scum” by critics for calling Will out after he “s******* abused” Alicia onstage.
One tweeted: “In that case, Jim Carrey should be jailed for s******* assaulting a teenage Alicia Silverstone on stage at the 1997 MTV Awards, and then also trying to s******* assault Will Smith at the same awards show.”
Another added: “It’s amazing that Jim Carrey s******* assaulted Alicia Silverstone by physically forcing her to kiss him on national TV and it had literally no impact on his career whatsoever.
“He’s such a complete piece of s*** on so many levels.”
A third posted: “He forcibly kissed Alicia Silverstone AND also tried to do the same thing to Will Smith.
“Regardless of age or age gaps, what Jim Carrey did was ASSAULT. He’s scum and he had no business forcing himself on people!”
The criticism came just days after Jim spoke out against Will’s slap on Gayle King of Good Morning America.
During the virtual conversation, the Ace Ventura star added, “I was sickened, I was sickened by the standing ovation.”
“I felt like Hollywood is just spineless, en mass. It really felt like a really clear indication that we’re not the cool club anymore.”
Following that, Gayle addressed viewers’ worries about how the scenario unfolded and why security did not act.
The LAPD then announced that Chris would not be filing charges, despite Jim’s belief that Will should be held accountable.
“He doesn’t want the hassle. I [would have] announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200million because that video’s gonna be there forever. It’s gonna be ubiquitous,” Jim said.
“You know, that insult is gonna last a very long time. If you want to yell from the audience and disapprove or show disapproval or say something on Twitter or whatever, you know.
“You do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face because they said words.”
At the Oscars, Will, 53, stunned the audience and viewers when he smacked Chris for making a joke about his wife Jada’s shaved head.
“Jada, I love you, G. I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it,” the standup comic said, referring to Jada’s shaved head.
Jada Pinkett Smith, who initially revealed she had the hair loss condition alopecia in 2018, rolled her eyes at the joke and appeared irritated, prompting Will to act.
As he stormed the stage and smacked the presenter across the face, stars like Nicole Kidman and Lupita Nyong’o were stunned.
The Fresh Prince star then walked back to his seat as a stunned Chris said: “Will Smith just smacked the s*** out of me.”
Will yelled at the comedian: “Leave my wife’s name out of your f****** mouth.”
Chris looked visibly shaken and said: “Wow, dude, it was a G.I. Jane joke,” to which Will repeated, “Keep my wife’s name out your f****** mouth!”
Chris said, “I’m going to, okay?” before adding, “That was the… greatest night in the history of television.”
Chris is said to have not spoken to Will since the event.
Will apologised to Chris almost a day later, calling his behaviour “unacceptable and inexcusable.”
Representatives for the Oscars told the Hollywood Reporter on March 30 that “disciplinary hearings” have commenced over the on-stage incident involving Will.
