After sharing a lengthy video documenting her minor stroke and heart treatment in March, Hailey Baldwin Bieber is thanking her followers for “all the kind messages.”
In a 12-minute YouTube video posted Wednesday, the 25-year-old model discussed her March 10 hospitalisation for the first time, saying that she had stroke-like symptoms caused by a blood clot in her brain.
Baldwin Bieber was eventually diagnosed with a patent foramen ovale, or PFO, a small opening in the heart that didn’t heal properly after birth, causing a blood clot to travel from her heart to her brain, resulting in her mini stroke, according to physicians. She had surgery to close the PFO, which went “very smoothly,” according to Baldwin Bieber, and she is now fully recovered.
Baldwin Bieber expressed her gratitude to her fans on Thursday afternoon.
“Thank you for all the kind messages, and thank you everyone who reached out after yesterday’s video,” she posted on her instagram story.
“Hearing so many people share their experiences and having that shared journey with so many has made all of this feel less scary. 🦋 🤍”
After receiving queries about her hospitalisation, Baldwin Bieber said in her video that she wanted to relay the tale in her “own words.” She was eating breakfast with husband Justin Bieber the morning of her mini stroke when she felt a “weird sensation” in her right arm and numbness in her fingertips, and she “couldn’t speak.”
“The right side of my face started drooping, I couldn’t get a sentence out,” she said. “Immediately, I thought I was having a stroke.”
Baldwin Bieber was transported to the hospital, where she “was pretty much back to normal” and able to speak and use her arm by the time she arrived. She experienced a TIA – a Transient Ischemic Attack, sometimes known as a mini-stroke – because she no longer had any stroke symptoms or damage to her brain.
Doctors told Baldwin Bieber that she had a blood clot that cut off oxygen to her brain for a period of time, and that the clot could have been caused by three factors: she recently started taking birth control without consulting her doctor and has a history of migraines, which birth control can exacerbate; she recently had COVID-19; and she had been travelling “from Paris to New York in a really short amount of time.” These three factors likely combined to create a “perfect storm” that resulted in her small stroke.
Doctors diagnosed Baldwin Bieber with a PFO during a follow-up appointment, determining that it was a Grade 5 — the “highest grade” imaginable — and that the hole in her heart was between 12 and 13 millimetres. Doctors fixed it by inserting a little button-like thing into her femoral vein in the groyne, and her heart tissue will eventually grow back around the closure device.
As she heals, Baldwin Bieber is taking aspirin and blood thinners on a daily basis, but she says she’s ready to move on.
“The biggest thing I feel is I just feel really relieved that we were able to figure everything out, that we were able to get it closed, that I will be able to move on from this really scary situation and just live my life,” she said.
