One of Dorothy’s gowns from the iconic American film “The Wizard of Oz” has been found and will be auctioned off next month after decades of searching.

Actress Mercedes McCambridge donated it to the Catholic University of America in 1973, but it went stolen afterwards.

“Returning to COVID, a retired professor was sorting through boxes in his office. And there, lo and behold, was the gown “Helen Hall, director of popular culture at Bonhams in Los Angeles, agreed.

According to the auction house, MGM didn’t keep track of the movie’s costumes, but five have appeared since the film’s debut in 1939. One of the renowned blue and white gingham dresses was lost in a fire, leaving just four.

The estimate for the pre-sale auction is $800,000 to $1.2 million. According to the auctioneers, another version of the garment sold in 2015 for $1.5 million. The money raised will be used to start a new film acting department at the institution.
