Film industry’s ambitions are ready to be relaunched in Cannes
With another star-studded lineup set to be unveiled on Thursday, the Cannes Film Festival will attempt to revive the industry’s aspirations.
Following a gradual recovery from the Covid-19 outbreak, the film industry will be looking for a boost on the French Riviera when the 75th edition of the world’s most prestigious film festival returns from May 17 to 28.
Tom Cruise has already confirmed his attendance at the festival, where he will be promoting the global premiere of “Top Gun: Maverick,” the follow-up to his 1986 hit.
Tom Hanks, who co-stars in “Elvis” as the rock’n’roll star’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker, will also be in attendance.
The latter is the newest spectacular from Baz Luhrmann, the Australian director who previously lit up Cannes with “Moulin Rouge!” and “Gatsby.”
The remainder of the lineup, including the 20-odd films contending for the top award Palme d’Or, will be revealed on Thursday.
After last year’s classic edition, the selection committee had a tough act to follow after sifting through over 2,000 entries in recent weeks.
Following the pandemic’s cancellation of the festival in 2020, it debuted numerous films that went on to global popularity, including “Drive My Car.”
It went on to win this year’s Oscar for best international feature film after winning three honours at Cannes, and it was the first Japanese film to be nominated in the best picture category.
