Gilbert Gottfried died due to complications from Muscular Dystrophy

Gilbert Jeremy Gottfried was an American actor and stand-up comedian. His persona as a comedian featured an exaggerated shrill voice and emphasis on crude humor.

Gilbert Gottfried, the legendary comedian, died on Tuesday after a “long illness,” according to his family. Gottfried’s death, according to his attorney, was caused by a cardiac rhythm problem called recurrent ventricular tachycardia, which was caused by myotonic dystrophy type II.What is this uncommon ailment?

There are two kinds of myotonic dystrophy, a disease that affects the muscles and other body systems, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Adult-onset muscular dystrophy is the most frequent type of muscular dystrophy.

The NIH states that myotonic dystrophy type II, which Gottfried is said to have, is inherited. Muscle weakness, soreness, and stiffness are common symptoms, which appear in people in their 20s and 30s.

Myotonic dystrophy type II affects the muscles as well as organs such as the heart, eyes, and pancreas, resulting in myotonia, or continuous muscle tensing. The severity of the illness varies from person to person, and even from family member to family member.

Myotonic dystrophy is also known to induce erratic cardiac electrical regulation.

Ventricular tachycardia is a condition in which the heart beats faster than usual—usually 100 or more beats per minute, compared to the normal 60 to 100. It is caused by abnormal electrical signals in the lower chambers of the heart, according to the Mayo Clinic.

“In addition to being the most iconic voice in comedy, Gilbert was a wonderful husband, brother, friend and father to his two young children. Although today is a sad day for all of us, please keep laughing as loud as possible in Gilbert’s honor,” his family said in a statement posted on Twitter.
