Jake Gyllenhaal returned to Saturday Night Live for the first time since 2007, remarking on how long ago it was in his opening monologue.
The Ambulance star remarked, “That was like 400 Marvel movies ago.” “To give you a flavour of what it was like in 2007, there was a George W. Bush comedy, jokes about the first iPhone, and this is a photo of myself from my monologue on the programme I hosted.”
We then went to a shot of Gyllenhaal singing in a wig and a sparkly gown, backed up by Maya Rudolph, Amy Poehler, and Kristen Wiig. “There I am in full drag, performing a Dreamgirls song to promote a film in which I portrayed a homosexual cowboy,” the presenter explained. “That was probably the least troubling aspect of the incident, but in retrospect, I feel like I was a completely different person.”
Gyllenhaal then went on to talk about how he’s earned a reputation as “this serious, focused method actor,” despite the fact that he “wasn’t really that good” at it. “I remember going to the director for Nightcrawler and telling him, ‘Get ready for me to drop 48 pounds and win the Oscar.’ Then, a week later, he remarked, “How would you like to see an actor drop 36 pounds and win a Golden Globe?” “Then I came up on set and said, ‘You’re looking at a guy who gained 10 pounds and isn’t concerned about accolades.'”
Gyllenhaal admitted that he was just “doing that method stuff” because he felt it was necessary to be a serious actor, and it caused him to forget “how to have fun.”
He stated, “That’s when I discovered what I should have realised a long time ago—acting is a terribly foolish career.” “It’s pretended, it’s fun, and it should be enjoyable.” Well, I’ve finally rediscovered that delight, which is why I’m back on this stage.”
Gyllenhaal said he never expected SNL to “come calling” again, given how long ago he first appeared on the show. He wasn’t sure he’d recall how to host in the first place. “However, being here tonight seems like everything is suddenly coming back,” he remarked.
Gyllenhaal then delivered a powerful rendition of Celine Dion’s “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now,” backed by Chloe Fineman, Ego Nwodim, and Cecily Strong.
Camila Cabello, a musical guest, will perform with Gyllenhaal tonight.
