Jon Watts will take a step back from the MCU.

Jon Watts, the director of Spider-Man, has stepped down as the director of Marvel’s next Fantastic Four picture.

The film will be the third attempt at adapting the comic books, with Disney taking the reins this time and Watts joining the production in late 2020. The director, on the other hand, has decided to step down.

His departure is thought to be amicable, as both Marvel and Watts have confirmed.

Speaking of his decision to part from the MCU, Watts said (via Deadlines): “Making three Spider-Man films was an incredible and life-changing experience for me. I’m eternally grateful to have been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for seven years.

“I’m hopeful we’ll work together again and I can’t wait to see the amazing vision for Fantastic Four brought to life.”

Watts’ most recent effort was Spider-Man: No Way Home, the last instalment of the Spider-Man: Homecoming trilogy, which grossed $1.89 billion and was the sixth highest-grossing picture of all time.

The trilogy earned Tom Holland and Zendaya, who played Euphoria in the film, big roles, and made waves for being the first Marvel film to include multiple versions of the same character on screen.

Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito, co-presidents of Marvel Studios, said in a statement that they had no hard feelings about the director’s decision.

“Collaborating with Jon on the Spider-Man films has been a true pleasure,” they said. “We were looking forward to continuing our work with him to bring the Fantastic Four into the MCU but understand and are supportive of his reasons for stepping away.

“We are optimistic that we will have the opportunity to work together again at some point down the road.”

Fortunately, despite his departure from the MCU, Watts has a resume full of noteworthy ventures.

Last September, he signed on to develop and direct an untitled project for Apple Studios, in which George Clooney and Brad Pitt are set to be rival “fixers” recruited to do the same job.
