The Kardashians have been chastised in a harsh story published in the Los Angeles Times, which criticises their new looks and high-profile partnerships with black males.
The assessment comes only days after the premiere of the new Hulu series starring the famous family.
The author takes a hard line with the show’s well-known stars, who criticised it for its unrelatable portrayal of reality.
The Kardashian-Jenner family was also chastised in the opinion post for their altered appearances, claiming that they “pretend they were simply born that way.”
They accused the women of setting “impossible beauty standards” as role models for young girls who adore their curvaceous proportions, according to one remark.
Kourtney, Kim, Khloe, Kendall, and Kylie Jenner have all been chastised for their bodily transformations over the years, despite their repeated denials.
Kris Jenner, the family’s matriarch, has also been questioned about her youthful appearance.
The journalist’s scathing remarks didn’t end there; they also made remarks about the women’s bi-racial relationships. A lot of black celebrities have been among their lovers.
Kim and Kanye West’s nearly seven-year marriage came to an end recently. North, eight, and Chicago, four, are their girls, and Saint, six, and Psalm, two, are their sons.
Khloe was once married for seven years to NBA star Lamar Odom before divorcing him in 2016 and moving on with basketball player Tristan Thompson.
True, their four-year-old daughter, is theirs.
Kylie has two children with rapper Travis Scott: a two-month-old son and a four-year-old girl named Stormi.
Meanwhile, Kris has been seeing Corey Gamble, a business professional, for quite some time.
As the piece highlighted a comment by Ren Ellis Neyra, a Wesleyan University associate professor of African American studies, the family, who are of Armenian origin, faced criticism for their mixed racial romances.
“The Kardashians are a prime example of multiracial white supremacy,” she wrote in the digital magazine Public Books.
“A commercial enterprise posing as a family, the Kardashians are hell-bent on extracting financial gain from Black people and Black culture, even as they stigmatize, in particular, Black women through their project of multiracial whiteness.”
The remark refers to their dramatic physical modifications since their reality show careers began in 2007, saying that their developed appearances have been influenced by black culture.
APPROPRIATION OF CULTURE
The twins’ looks have gotten them into trouble before for cultural appropriation, as they have made some hazardous fashion choices in the past.
Fans have accused the daughters of disrespecting the culture by wearing wigs and extensions, as was the case in March 2019 when Khloe, 37, went out with a Diana Ross wig.
In honour of the singer’s 75th birthday, the reality personality opted for huge blonde curls instead of her usual straight locks.
Fans, on the other hand, were not pleased with her appearance and accused her of cultural appropriation due to the texture of her hair.
One Twitter user reacted: “Why does Khloe Kardashian want to be black this badly?”
While another was offended by the hair transformation tweeting: “Literally, Khloe, STOP IT…. the hair… STOP IT.”
And another agreed, writing: “What the hell? It seems more like she’s disrespecting Ms. Ross than honoring her.”
Khloe received more backlash in March 2020 after she posted an Instagram selfie of herself wearing cornrows with long, pink pastel ends.
Kim, her older sister, enraged fans in March 2020 when she wore hair braids at Paris Fashion Week.
The Keeping Up With the Kardashians alum stunned viewers by donning her now ex-husband Kanye West’s A/W 20/21 Paris Fashion Week presentation with the tight braids.
Online reactions rushed in, with a flood of scathing remarks.
One person said: “I wish I was as determined to do anything as Kim Kardashian is to appropriate black hairstyles.”
Another added: “Can you please stop appropriating black culture?”
‘I’M NOT TONE DEAF’
A TikTok user released a vintage KUWTK clip of the mother-of-four seeking Khloe and her sister Kourtney’s children’s father Scott Disick’s help to remove her tight braids last year.
Scott, 38, joyfully cut some of them with scissors, comparing it to “cutting carpet” until Kim requested him to unbraid some of the chopped ends.
Fans accused the star of cultural appropriation for donning a look that is popular among black people in the comments section.
One user wrote: “Culture vulture,” while another wrote: “Why is she getting braids? They’re not for her hair.”
Talking to Bustle at the time, in 2018, Kim said: “I actually didn’t see backlash. I actually did that look because North said she wanted braids and asked if I would do them with her.
“So we braided her hair and then we braided my hair. But I obviously know they’re called Fulani braids and I know the origin of where they came from and I’m totally respectful of that. I’m not tone deaf to where I don’t get it. I do get it.”
In a December 2021 interview with i-D magazine, Kim addressed the continuous controversy over her haircuts and other blackfishing claims once more.
“Obviously, I would never do anything to appropriate any culture. But I have in the past got backlash from putting my hair in braids and I understand that,” Kim began, explaining that most of her hairstyles are influenced by her eight-year-old daughter North.
MORE HAIR BLUNDERS
Kendall, 26, and Kylie, 24, Kim’s younger half-siblings, don’t appear to have learnt from their older sister’s blunders, since they’ve both been chastised for stealing black culture.
Kendall received controversy in August 2019 after being photographed in braids while out in Los Angeles.
Critics voiced their opinions on the supermodel’s hairstyle online as one person commented: “I’m EXHAUSTED of white people constantly appropriating black culture and wearing hairstyles that we are always ridiculed/ chastised for having and just doing it because they want to ‘look different’ or ‘stand out.'”
A second user echoed the statement, adding: “We wear these hairstyles to PROTECT our natural hair from damages but they wanna wear it because it looks cool. It shouldn’t be worn by them period.”
Kylie received similar reactions months later when she debuted her hair in twists.
