Maya Hawke has joined Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein biography Maestro as a new addition to the cast.

The 23-year-old actress joined the cast of the film, which will depict the life of the conductor and composer who created works like West Side Story.

Carey Mulligan and Matt Bomer are also set to star in the Netflix film, which Bradley will play the lead in. Hawke will play Jamie Bernstein, Bernstein’s daughter.

Cooper and Josh Singer wrote the film, which follows Bernstein and Felicia Cohn Montealegre through their complicated love story. Bernstein struggled with his sexuality for more than 30 years, beginning with their initial meeting in 1946 and continuing through two on-again, off-again engagements, a 25-year marriage, and three children.

Cooper, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Fred Berner, and Amy Durning will all produce the film, which will begin filming next month in New York.

Maya is the daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, and she is well aware that her famous parents have ‘made it easy’ for her to pursue her dream of being an actor.

The Stranger Things actress said: ‘I’m very grateful for the fact that they made it so easy for me to do the thing that I love. I think I’ll get a couple chances on their name and then if I suck, I’ll get kicked out of the kingdom. And that’s what should happen. So I’m just going to try not to suck.’

Maya also insisted that there was ‘no moment’ in which she realized she had a passion for acting.

She explained: ‘There was no moment. I was always just doing school plays and acting camp over the summer. I guess it clicked for me that I wanted to do it professionally was when I realized that there were no school plays for adults. The happiest place in the world for me was on set or on stage.’

In recent months, the Mainstream actress has been in high demand, with her appearance in Maestro being the most recent career achievement.

Asteroid City and Strangers are two films she is currently working on in post-production.
