Will Smith resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Friday as he faced possible suspension for his violent act last Sunday.

The slap was heard from whole world, which sent shockwaves throughout the entertainment industry and embroiled 53 years old Will, the huge controversy of his career.

The board of Academy is now “moving forward” with disciplinary proceedings – in line with revised rules following the 2017 #MeToo movement.

This could mean Will could lose his role for movie King Richard, with the rules stipulating sanctions: “May include private reprimand, public reprimand, temporary or permanent loss of privileges to attend and participate in Academy events or activities, temporary or permanent loss of eligibility to receive or hold or revocation of Academy awards or honors, temporary or permanent loss of eligibility to hold Academy service and volunteer roles, or other sanctions that the Academy in its sole discretion may deem appropriate.”

His fans took twitter handle after the shocking debacle, with many claiming the Men in Black star should lose his award

One of the fan wrote: “If #WillSmith had handed back his #oscar this morning, he might have saved his career. There were only upsides and, after all, no one is going to forget that he won one. Now he could lose it anyway and he hasn’t done enough to make us love him again.”

Another added that: “If real, Will should lose his Oscar, charges filed, and boot from the academy. #WillSmith,” while one classed his “reputation” as “ruined.”

An Oscar’s follower continued with: “Honestly #WillSmith deserves to lose his Oscar for what he did to #ChrisRock so uncalled for and unprofessional” as another wrote: “Will Smith should lose his Oscar and donate his fee for the film to charity.”

One of them took an opposing stance, and flagged: “If Roman Polanski and Harvey Weinstein got to keep their Oscars and they did much worse than him, then no Will Smith shouldn’t lose his Oscar. Not at all.”

Whereas, it has happened only once when the Academy asked for an award back was for the 1967 documentary Young Americans, which was found to have been released too early for the Oscars in 1969.

Movie star in his statement on Friday called his actions “shocking, painful and inexcusable” and said that he will accept any additional consequences that the Academy’s Board of Governors deems appropriate.

“The list of those I have hurt is long and including Chris and his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home. I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken.”

He continued in his emotional message: “I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film. So, I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate.” Star concluded with: “Change takes time and I am committed to doing the work to ensure that I never again allow violence to overtake reason.”

Just few minutes after Will released his statement, the Academy sent out a memo of their own to accept his formal resignation.

Will has already apologized from Chris online in which he called his actions “poisonous and destructive”.
