Morbius includes two credits scenes, one for each year that the film was postponed! And those two sequences are totally insane and, for better or worse, maybe more essential than the film itself.

The two sequences are mid-credits scenes, with one beginning when the film closes and the other immediately thereafter. Both scenes are linked and chronological.

The purple time gap seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home appears in Morbius’ opening credits sequence. In that film, Doctor Strange must piece the universe back together in order to prevent the multiverse from imploding on itself. The violet cracks in the sky represent the breaking of the multiverse, and the implication with this credits scene is that Morbius (Jared Leto) and his world (which includes Venom and Carnage) are one of the parallel dimensions threatening to bleed into Strange’s and the larger Marvel cinematic universe (MCU).

Instead of Morbius or any of his ilk being transferred into that timeframe, a visitor from Strange’s arrives at Morbius’. Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton), alias the Vulture, is the villain from Spider-Man: Homecoming. He emerges in a detention cell, having been brought from his own dimension, where he is doing time for, among other things, stealing Tony Stark’s jet. But, because Toomes has never been convicted of a crime in Morbius’ universe, he is exonerated and set free.

The second scenario follows off where the first one left off, with Morbius encountering a free Toomes. The Vulture wishes to form a supervillain group with our living vampire.

Morbius does not respond before the scene fades to darkness. I’m not persuaded Morbius will join him because his own film portrays him as more of an anti-hero than a supervillain.

Morbius’ credits scenes, especially when compared to those at the conclusion of Spider-Man: No Way Home and Venom: Let There Be Carnage, hint to the prospect of these heroes and villains ultimately merging, with the ultimate fanbase scenario including any of these characters teaming up with Spider-Man (Tom Holland).

And, at the end of No Way Home, it appeared as though Tom Hardy’s Venom would finally meet Holland’s Spidey, until the film walked it back, blinking Venom out of the MCU as easy as a snap.

All of this universe-colliding nonsense is significant because that is how Marvel and Sony have handled the film rights to various characters. Sony holds the film rights to Spider-Man and the Spider-Verse characters, but has worked with Marvel since Spider-Man: Homecoming to allow Holland’s Peter Parker to join the MCU. Meanwhile, Sony has worked independently on films such as Venom, Venom 2, and now Morbius.

And fans are eager to see if and when those Sony characters meet Spider-Man and potentially other Marvel characters.

That past tease and letdown is perhaps why I’m suspicious about Toomes’ decision to stay with Morbius. Getting too excited about Keaton’s Vulture and Leto’s Morbius joining up or battling may be a little premature, since it might all be undone by another credits sequence. However, with this shocking cameo (which was hinted in one of the film’s trailers), it can’t help but seem that the credits sequence and prospective sequel are more essential than anything that transpired in Morbius.

We should know more about Morbius, Vulture, and their future together shortly. We’ll know for sure if a Morbius sequel is revealed, but if we stay around for the following credits sequence with one of Spider-friends, Man’s we could learn more even sooner.
