Will Smith Dubbed Jada Party His ‘Low Point.’

Will Smith hit a “low moment” after his surprise for Jada Pinkett Smith’s 40th birthday party fell through.

The actor has been forthcoming about the event, which the pair discussed in a resurrected Red Table Talk tape, and he also included it in his latest biography Will. Smith told her it was “the most disgusting display of vanity I have ever seen in my life” after showing a documentary on Pinkett Smith’s life at her birthday party, a surprise three years in the planning.

The couple’s marriage has been in the limelight for years, and it was brought to a head again when Smith smacked Chris Rock onstage at the Oscars for making a joke about Pinkett Smith’s hair. Later that night, he won the Academy Award for Best Actor, but the next day, he formally apologised to Rock.

The “Low Point” in the Smith Marriage

During an episode of Red Table Talk that aired on October 29, 2018, Smith spoke out to his family about his “low moment,” which coincided with Pinkett Smith’s 40th birthday.

He spent three years producing a documentary for her birthday that detailed her family history and included hidden audio of her grandmother, and he even tracked down a descendant of the white family that had owned Pinkett Smith’s forebears. He also persuaded Mary J. Blige to sing at the event, and Smith characterised himself as “the young kid who wants mother to say everything was fantastic,” but he didn’t aware she was experiencing a “very terrible emotional period.”

They eventually returned to their room, and Willow joined them. Smith described the incident in Red Table Talk, but expanded on it in his biography Will. “That was the most horrible show of ego I have ever seen in my life,” Smith remembers her saying.

Pinkett Smith and Smith began arguing so loudly that Willow, 10, came out weeping with her hands over her ears, pleading for them to stop. A letter Willow allegedly penned as a youngster, written to Tupac Shakur, has just resurfaced, pleading for him to return to make her “mother happy.”

Following the event, he said on Red Table Talk that he was “crushed” and that he still knew he was crushed “because it was real.”

Will Smith stated in his memoir: “Our marriage was failing. We couldn’t pretend any longer. We were both unhappy, and something had to change.”

During an interview with GQ in November 2021, Smith explained what happened in his marriage following this period. Smith stated in his book on his marriage to Pinkett Smith, “Jada never believed in conventional marriage…. Jada had family members that had an unorthodox relationship.” As a result, she grew up in a totally different way than I did.

“Marriage for us can’t be a prison. And I don’t suggest our road for anybody. I don’t suggest this road for anybody. But the experiences that the freedoms that we’ve given one another and the unconditional support, to me, is the highest definition of love.”
