Bruce Willis’ wife Caring for family is taking ‘toll’ on mental health
Bruce Willis’ wife Emma Heming Willis admits she’s struggling amid husband Bruce Willis’ aphasia diagnosis.
“I put my family’s needs above my own, which I found does not make me any kind of hero,” the model, 43, told The Bump in an interview published Thursday.
“That amount of care for everyone else within my household had taken a toll on my mental health and overall health,” she continued. “And it served no one in my family.”
Emma, who has two kids with the 67-year-old actor, Mabel, 10, and Evelyn, 8, said she’s learning to “mother” herself and is “making the time for self-care” on a daily basis.
“Someone told me not long ago that when you over-care for someone, you end up under-caring for yourself,” she explained. “That stopped me in my tracks and really resonated with me.”
Emma prefers to concentrate on her “basic baseline needs,” which include exercise.
“It’s a time I can disconnect and can do something that I know makes me feel good overall,” she told the outlet of working out. “I think it’s important to find that one thing that makes you feel good and build from there.”
In March, Emma shared a statement alongside Bruce’s ex-wife, Demi Moore, and their three daughters — Rumer, 33, Scout, 30, and Tallulah, 28 — about the actor’s current health issues.
“With much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him,” their social media uploads announced at the time.
“This is a really challenging time for our family and we are so appreciative of your continued love, compassion and support. We are moving through this as a strong family unit.”
The statement concluded with a quote from Bruce, reading, “‘Live it up.’ … Together we plan to do just that.”
Emma shared some fresh photos with her husband during a “off the grid” camping trip the following month. In April, she wrote, “Mom & Dad in their favourite habitat.”
The “Red 2” actor married Bruce in March 2009, and the couple welcomed two daughters, Mabel and Evelyn, in 2012 and 2014.
Moore, 59, was previously married to the Golden Globe winner from 1987 to 2000.
