Bruce Campbell expresses his surprise that his Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness got the final cut. Sam Raimi, a frequent collaborator with Campbell who is best known for developing the Evil Dead trilogy, which launched both of their careers, helmed the most current entry in the MCU.

Doctor Strange in the Universe of Madness follows the titular Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) as he tries to protect a young hero (America Chavez, played by Xochitl Gomez) with the ability to travel across time and space who is on the run from Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen).

Campbell, on the other hand, appears in both the main film and the Multiverse of Madness post-credits segment as a vendor with a food stall in another realm visited by Strange and Chavez. Campbell’s character is enchanted by Doctor Strange to beat himself up over a mistake, a reference to Campbell’s role as Ash Williams in the Evil Dead films.

Campbell recently told The Hollywood Reporter that he was surprised that his character in Multiverse of Madness made it to the final cut. The actor claimed that the movie went through several rewrites during production, and he assumed that his scene would be cut.

As Bruce said on Screenrant, “I can’t believe I made it into the movie! I used to joke that Benedict Cumberbatch wasn’t sure he was going to be in the movie because they were constantly reworking the storyline and Sam had to shoot additional stuff that wasn’t in the original script, so it’s a shell game.”

Given Raimi and Campbell’s decades-long friendship, it’s not surprising that the filmmaker would find a way for Campbell to participate in the picture and ensure it made the final edit. Even before the publication of Multiverse of Madness, there was a lot of chatter on the internet about Campbell’s possible appearance. Before the release of the Doctor Strange sequel, Campbell announced his involvement on Twitter, but left fans wondering in what capacity he would return.
