According to reports, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav is unhappy by the lack of productivity from Bad Robot’s $250 million overall agreement. J.J. Abrams’ Demimonde, the first programme the prolific producer has developed since Fringe in 2008, is on the bubble at HBO.
The budget for HBO’s Demimonde, which has been in the works since 2018, is a cause of disagreement, according to The Hollywood Reporter, with Abrams’ Bad Robot wanting a budget of more than $200 million. By contrast, HBO’s planned Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon has a budget of less than $200 million.
This week, a decision on whether the sci-fi drama Demimonde will go on is expected. The drama, which landed at HBO with a straight-to-series order two weeks after being sold to buyers, cast Station Eleven and Watchmen alum Danielle Deadwyler in April, and sources claim studio Warner Bros. TV has evaluated 10 of the eight scripts for the drama.
The entire arrangement between Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Discovery is not immediately in peril, however the lack of output has sparked a bigger debate about what the newly merged business intends to come out of the deal. According to reports, Zaslav was dissatisfied with the lack of delivery on the arrangement, which was inked in September 2019 after Abrams and Bad Robot visited with bidders such as Apple in search of a lucrative new deal.
Under the terms of the arrangement, Abrams has a number of projects in the works, including an adult animated Batman series with Demimonde, which reunites Abrams with his Felicity partner and friend Matt Reeves (who is behind The Batman feature film). Original projects by Abrams and Bad Robot include HBO Max’s Subject to Change. Both dramas have received formal series orders and are based on Abrams’ original ideas. The pilot for Demimonde, which has already had two showrunners, is being directed by Abrams.
According to sources, the DC Comics assets have also been scrutinised. The discovery that Abrams has laid claim to a number of DC characters but has yet to get anything on the air has caused some dissatisfaction within the Warner Bros. hallways, according to sources. According to sources, Warner Bros. has viewed Constantine and Madame X pilot screenplays.
