Joe Alwyn claims he had no intention of writing the melody and first line of “Exile” for girlfriend Taylor Swift’s “Folklore” album.

That’s what he tells GQ magazine, at least. He told the publication, “It was really the most accidental thing to happen in lockdown,” added, “It wasn’t like, ‘It’s three o’clock, it’s time to write a song!’ It was just messing around on a piano and singing badly and being overheard and then thinking, you know, what if we tried to get to the end of it together?”

Alwyn obtained two co-writing credits on “Folklore” and three on the follow-up album, “Evermore,” under the moniker William Bowery.
He explained that the pair kept it a secret since “the idea was that people would just listen to the music rather than focus on the fact that we wrote it together.”

But word got out, and the couple, who are notorious for keeping their romance covert, ended up winning Grammys for their cooperation.

He’s fine with talking about music, but he’s not keen on discussing his connection with Swift.
Alwyn, whose TV show “Conversations with Friends” launches this month, is well aware of his reputation for keeping secrets.

He said, “I’m sure I’ve come across as guarded in the past,” added, “And it’s a mix of me being British and having a private life. But I don’t want to be going into these things guarded.”
