Following in the footsteps of Don McLean, Larry Gatlin, and Larry Stewart, right-wing country musician Lee Greenwood has announced his withdrawal from the performance set for May 27 in Houston, organised by America’s infamous gun lobbying group, the National Rifle Association (NRA).

According to ‘Variety,’ Greenwood was followed by T. Graham Brown and Danielle Peck, whose choice was undoubtedly influenced by the slaughter of schoolchildren in Uvalde, Texas. With their departures, the show is down to one musician, Jacob Bryant. The event is expected to be cancelled on Friday, according to sources.

As Greenwood said in a statement, “As a father, I join the rest of America in being absolutely heartbroken by the horrific event that transpired this week in Texas. I was scheduled to perform at the NRA’s private event on Saturday with my band. After thoughtful consideration, we have decided to cancel the appearance out of respect for those mourning the loss of those innocent children and teachers in Uvalde.”

The performance is part of a bigger NRA gathering that includes talks from former President Donald Trump, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, and Texas Senator Ted Cruz, as well as “over 14 acres of guns and gear and 800 exhibitors,” a firearms law conference, a prayer breakfast, and other events.

Even though it is less than a week after — and fewer than 300 miles from — Uvalde, where a school shooting murdered at least 19 children and two adults on Monday, the festival will go on.

It was the deadliest and at least the tenth mass shooting in the United States this year, as well as the 27th school shooting in the country — including one only two weeks earlier in Houston, in which two men were murdered and three gravely wounded, according to ‘Variety.’
