
Lee Jung-jae, star of ‘Squid Game,’ takes over the camera for ‘Hunt.’
Lee Jung-jae, the star of “Squid Game,” exercises his filmmaking abilities with “Hunt,” a spy thriller in which he wrote, directed, produced, and acted.
Lee’s directing and scripting debut had its global premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where it is being screened outside of competition.
The film revolves around two South Korean spies who are entrusted with identifying a North Korean mole and end up probing each other in the process.
Lee, 49, plays one of the spies in the film, alongside his long-time friend and business partner Jung Woo-sung.
The 75th Cannes Film Festival begins in full swing.
He stated that his almost three-decade career was a huge assistance while getting behind the camera.
“I’ve performed in a variety of genres, and I recall situations I’d filmed as an actor that were tough to film or didn’t turn out as I intended,” he told Reuters in Cannes.
“When I was writing the script, I attempted to remember those situations so that I could be as effective as possible when directing.”
Lee makes his debut on the heels of the success of his Netflix series, which became the streaming giant’s most popular show internationally, as well as the global successes of other Korean TV shows, films, and music.
“I am really grateful to be making my directorial debut during this period of Korean cultural revival,” Lee added.
“I aim to encounter foreign audiences and fans more frequently with different films and material.”
Lee did not hesitate when asked which of the numerous hats he wore on the project he appreciated the best.
“Of course, there is acting. I work as an actor. It’s part of my identity. So I simply preferred performing.”
