Meghan Markle, the British royal couple’s wife, paid an unannounced visit to the Texas town of Uvalde on Thursday to pay her condolences to the victims of an elementary school massacre that killed 19 children and two instructors.

The 40-year-old Duchess of Sussex, dressed in jeans, a t-shirt, and a blue baseball cap, knelt and put flowers at a makeshift memorial outside the Uvalde courthouse with her head bent.

She also walked around the memorial, looking at the white crosses with the names of those who died in the violence on Tuesday.

Markle was at Uvalde in her own capacity and as a mother, according to a spokesperson for the duchess, to offer condolences and support to the bereaved community.

Harry and his wife left the royal family two years ago and relocated to North America. With their two children, they now reside in California.

Buckingham Palace revealed earlier this month that the pair would not be present for Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations on June 2.
