Live-action Matt Murdock and his crime-fighting alter ego Daredevil have been struck by a vehicle, put in the trash, and left for dead in a building collapse, yet they never give up. Neither does the MCU, it appears.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Entertainment has given the go-ahead for a new Daredevil series to air on Disney+, featuring Charlie Cox as the Man Without Fear. Cox first played the role in the critically acclaimed Netflix series Daredevil, which was part of the now-defunct Marvel Television branch that broadcast live-action MCU productions.
Daredevil aired on Netflix for three seasons, as well as one crossover season with The Defenders, which brought Matt Murdock together with fellow street-level heroes Luke Cage (Mike Colter), Jessica Jones (Kristen Ritter), and Iron Fist (Mike Colter) (Finn Jones).
Despite their success, the Netflix MCU episodes were cancelled in 2018, a decision that seemed to foreshadow — and eventually did foreshadow — Disney creating its own streaming service and choosing to release all of its material in one place. In early 2022, all of the Marvel programmes on Netflix were deleted from their original platform.
However, it took a year for Disney to create Disney+, and another three for the more adult-oriented ex-Netflix MCU series to debut on the site, where viewers may now watch them after proving their age.
After Murdock’s enemy Wilson Fisk/Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) was revealed as the surprise villain in Hawkeye and Murdock himself featured as Peter Parker’s lawyer in Spider-Man: No Way Home, anticipation that Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock will receive a new programme in the MCU has grown in recent months.
It’s unclear whether the new Daredevil programme will include or allow the return of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, or even Frank Castle/The Punisher (Jon Bernthal).
Which additional Daredevil cast members will return for the next season is also uncertain. It’s difficult to picture a Daredevil series without fan favourites Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) and Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson), but it’s also difficult to imagine Daredevil returning in any format, so getting your hopes up might not be the worst idea. A teeny-tiny, teeny-tiny bit.
