Piers Morgan will ‘take six-week break’ from his TalkTV show, but insiders believe he won’t go way of Andrew Neil
Piers Morgan is set to take a six-week break from his flagship show on TalkTV as it suffers from dwindling ratings.
Morgan is set to give over the show to a rotating cast of stand-in presenters later this summer for an extended period.
Piers Morgan Uncensored has seen a drop in ratings from the first episode, which drew 400,000 people for the presenter’s opening night discussion with Donald Trump last month.
According to BARB (Broadcasters’ Audience Research Board) figures, a recent episode averaged 24,000 viewers and only had 10,000 at the conclusion.
During one episode, Morgan was beaten in the ratings by arch rival GB News, while other TalkTV broadcasts received a “zero viewers” Barb rating.
Morgan’s vacation plans were exposed on Twitter by Media Guido, and TalkTV, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News UK, declined to comment.
According to insiders, the host has a long-planned hiatus from Uncensored planned for later this summer.
Morgan has commitments to film a TV true crime series, after which he will likely take a break from his prime-time show for an extended length of time.
Morgan used to spend his summer vacations in the south of France, at his vacation house in Saint-Tropez, when he was the lead presenter on ITV’s Good Morning Britain.
Morgan’s departure sparked comparisons to Andrew Neil’s departure as GB News’ lead presenter on social media.
Neil said two weeks after the channel’s rocky launch that he was going on vacation to France and did not return to his hosting duties.
Morgan’s predicament, according to industry sources, was substantially different. He remains upbeat about TalkTV’s future, citing the social media impact of snippets from his show and declaring that “linear TV is meaningless” on social media.
When Morgan’s hiatus begins, it’s unclear who will take over his show.
Morgan had claimed that his candid view on the cultural conflicts would “cancel the cancel culture.”
However, for the first time since TalkTV’s launch, Nigel Farage’s GB News show drew more views than Morgan’s.
TalkTV was created with the intention of upsetting the television establishment. Industry insiders, on the other hand, feel Mr Murdoch misjudged the prime-time audience for opinion-driven news networks.
