The Russo brothers explained why they chose Chris Evans to play the villain in the forthcoming film The Gray Man in a recent interview with Comicbook. Evans has already worked with Joe and Anthony Russo, having played Captain America in four MCU films directed by the siblings.
During the discussion, the brothers discussed how Evans was cast in the film as Lloyd Hansen. “We didn’t have to pitch Chris on the position; in a way, Chris sold us,” Joe revealed. Evans wanted to dabble his toes in uncharted waters after portraying Steve Rogers, the righteous superhero, according to them. The brothers reportedly asked Evans about his future ambitions as an actor at the end of his tenure in the MCU.
He said, “‘You know what? I’m comfortable enough in my life and the work I’ve done that I’m just interested in taking risks moving forward, and I just want to play challenging characters.’ So it seemed obvious to us that the right move here would be to offer Chris the sociopath and not the hero.”
This will not, however, be the actor’s first time playing a bad role in a script. Chris plays Ransom Drysdale, the film’s evil character, in his 2019 flick Knives Out. Fans are looking forward to seeing Evans portray the villain in the next film. “We knew we needed someone who knew how to hide on some level,” Anthony said, and it turns out Chris Evans is the guy for the job.
