This has been brewing since Toby Emmerich left Warner Bros. and Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy took over. Although Joaquin Phoenix hasn’t inked an agreement to reprise his part as the unstable murderous anarchist Arthur Fleck in a sequel to the billion-dollar-grossing Joker, the project is still on track. Director Todd Phillips stated on Instagram that he and Scott Silver are working on a Joker sequel script, which Joaquin Phoenix, who won an Oscar for playing the Joker, is reading. With $1.07 billion in worldwide box office, the first Joker was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, earning 11 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, and a second Oscar win for Hildur Gunadóttir’s original score.
De Luca and Abdy, who will temporarily head the studio and DC for Warner Discovery CEO David Zaslav, will benefit from the start of a Joker sequel. Following Emmerich’s departure, De Luca and Abdy are in charge of DC while Zaslav searches for an executive to lead it across all platforms.
