The Trooping the Colour ceremony and another memorable appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony started off Queen Elizabeth celebrations for her platinum jubilee on Thursday, June 2. Following the first day of celebrations, it was revealed that the 96-year-old  would be withdrawing from Friday’s service event due to discomfort.

Meanwhile, the Queen completed the first day of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations by lighting two beacons with Prince William. While Prince William represented her at Buckingham Palace, the Goddess presided over the formal lighting of the Principal Platinum Jubilee Beacon from Windsor Castle. The illumination is believed to be in the shape of a 70-foot-tall monument known as the “Tree of Trees,” which commemorates the ruler’s 70 years on the throne.
