‘Top Gun 2’ Sets a New Record at the Box Office in Its Second Weekend
- Top Gun: Maverick grossed $25 million on its second weekend in North America.
- That’s the lowest drop ever for a film debuting to $100 million in the U.S.
- The sequel is performing well worldwide, having reached the $200 million mark Friday.
Top Gun: Maverick eclipsed 2005’s The War of the Worlds ($243.3 million) as Cruise’s highest-grossing picture in the United States. This is the highest-grossing film in the franchise, surpassing the original Top Gun ($180.3 million) and Cruise’s Mission: Impossible films, including the most recent, Mission: Impossible — Fallout ($220.2 million).

Top Gun: Maverick has already exceeded the original Top Gun, which earned $176 million before inflation. The United Kingdom is in first position with $39.7 million. In terms of worldwide box office, however, it falls short of other previous Mission: Impossible films. The fact that the sequel will not be released in China or Russia is one of the reasons.
After two years of restricted Hollywood offers owing to the pandemic, the film’s complete box office success shows that viewers are eager to return to theatres.
Top Gun: Maverick has the field to themselves in North America until Jurassic World: Dominion opens next weekend.

This weekend, David Cronenberg’s Cannes Film Festival entry Crimes of the Future opens at the specialty box office in the United States. The film will be released in almost 750 theatres, which is a large number for a niche picture. The film is expected to make around $1 million at the box office.
