Austin Butler damaged his vocal cords while filming ‘Elvis’
Austin Butler was considered for Miles Teller’s role as Bradley ‘Rooster’ Bradshaw in the summer blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick.
Although Teller finally won the part, Chamian claimed that she kept Butler in mind and subsequently assisted him in getting the lead part in Baz Luhrmann’s movie about Elvis.
Butler was in the running for the role of Rooster in Top Gun: Maverick, Chamian confirmed to the publication.
‘The thing that he got the closest to was Top Gun. When I cast that, we were looking for the role that Miles Teller played,’ she recalled.
The film’s producers liked the actor’s audition, but they decided that Teller would be a better fit for the part.
‘I felt so passionate about Austin. Ultimately, his audition was shown to Tom and all the filmmakers.
‘They agreed he had something and they were happy to know him, but they thought he was too young,’ she explained.
Chamian claimed that after witnessing Butler’s audition, she felt he was “unique” and had the charisma to hold audiences’ attention.
‘I saw that this actor has something very special that other people don’t always have. It’s almost the way he looks into the camera.
‘He knows the camera and lets the camera see him, and that is really what is so captivating,’ she gushed.
In the newly released biopic, Butler ultimately won the role of Elvis, which was apparently up for grabs between Teller and Butler.
On May 27, Top Gun: Maverick received a wide release, and since then, it has raked in more than $1 billion at the global box office.
It earned a lot of positive reviews and has a 97 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes right now.
Later, Chamian remarked that Butler quickly sprang to mind when she was asked to select a singer to feature in Elvis.
She said, “There was something about Austin that to me that was a little reminiscent of Elvis from the very beginning.”
Speaking on Butler’s performance, Chamian admitted that she was ‘blown away’ by his convincing Elvis portrayal.
He’s so great in the film, and by the end, people have missed that edit from Austin’s Elvis to the real Elvis.’
After months of buildup, the movie Elvis, which also stars Tom Hanks, was made available to the public last month.
Since then, the film has garnered overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics, many of whom applauded Butler’s interpretation of the lead vocalist.
