Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, quipped that she would “take off like Mary Poppins” while carrying a parasol for sun protection during a visit to Cornwall.
The Prince of Wales kept cool during their tour of the scenic fishing village of Mousehole. He wore sunglasses and a suit that was buttoned up the front.
In the coming days, they will go on a tour of Cornwall and the nearby county of Devon to mark the 70th anniversary of Charles taking over as Duke of Cornwall from the Queen. This happened in 1952.
The duchess spoke to the residents in Mousehole, in Penzance, where temperatures were about 10 degrees cooler than the oppressive 38C in London and the south-east: “This is very cool here. It’s stifling in London.
“I’m using my parasol. I think I’m going to take off like Mary Poppins. “
The throng lining Mousehall Harbour cheered the prince and his wife as they stopped to wave at kids on the beach waving Ukrainian and Union flags.
The royals spoke with survivors of the Grenfell tower fire who had been granted vacations in Cornwall by a local charity and met a couple who recounted to them the tale of their lifeguards’ sea rescue just 24 hours earlier.
“At the heart of Cornwall is hospitality,” she continued. “This was a very special day and it’s lovely the work is being recognized.”
She added, “We are very grateful the Royal Family takes an interest in this most horrific tragedy.”
