Friends’ co-creator Marta response to sit com’s ‘lack of diversity’
Marta Kauffman, the co-creator of Friends, recently responded to the long-standing complaint about the “lack of diversity” in sitcoms.
As an apology for not including “characters of colour” in the show, Kauffman reportedly gave $4 million to Brandeis University’s African and American Studies programme.
The 65-year-old, who co-created the popular sitcom with David Crane, said during a speech at the event, “I felt uncomfortable that Friends had a white cast.”

She remarked, “I’ve learnt a lot in the previous 20 years. Admitting and accepting guilt is not simple. Looking in the mirror at oneself hurts. I regret not having known better 25 years ago.
According to Kauffman, she previously didn’t comprehend the audience’s anger “for not presenting people of colour on the show,” but she now does.
The writer/producer claimed that after seeing the police shooting death of George Floyd in 2020, which led to nationwide “Black Lives Matter” demonstrations, her perspective on diversity had changed.
“I started to struggle with the fact that I had embraced systematic racism in ways I was never aware of after what happened to George Floyd. That’s when I truly started to consider my participation in the situation. I realised I had to change my course at that point, she told the outlet.
