Wolfgang Petersen died at 81 at his residence in Brentwood, Los Angeles. Wolfgang, a German director best known for the films “Das Boot,” “Outbreak,” and “Air Force One,” passed away from pancreatic cancer, according to a spokesman.
Over the course of a career spanning five decades, Petersen worked with stars including Clint Eastwood, Dustin Hoffman, George Clooney, Harrison Ford, and Brad Pitt. He passed away in Los Angeles on Friday.
Petersen, who was born in 1941 in Emden, Germany, achieved his first significant breakthrough with “Das Boot,” a World War II submarine thriller based on a book of the same name about the Battle of the Atlantic.
Petersen received two nominations for Oscars for the movie, including one for best director, and the following year he made his first English-language movie, the animated fantasy feature “The NeverEnding Story.”
In the 1990s, he switched to directing Hoffman in the pandemic-themed “Outbreak” and collaborating with Eastwood and John Malkovich in the assassination thriller “In The Line of Fire.”
In a statement to AFP, Glenn Close, who co-starred with Ford in Petersen’s “Air Force One,” stated that working with the German director “remains a cherished memory.”
She wrote, “I remember a lot of laughter, especially in the sequences around the large table in the War Room, even though the writing was exhilarating and really intense.
Close continued, “I remember a man full of joy who was doing what he most wanted to do.
Petersen helmed “Troy” and “The Perfect Storm” for Clooney and Pitt in the 2000s.
In the arms of his wife of 50 years, Maria Antoinette, he passed away at his home in Brentwood, Los Angeles.
In addition, Petersen is survived by his wife Berit, son Daniel, and two grandchildren, Maja and Julien.
