“Black Adam” earns $14 million in opening weekend Internationally
The international box office for Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam has reached $14 million in just two days of early previews.
The DC Comics anti-hero spectacle has finally appeared in theatres after months of anticipation.
It appears that the anticipation to see The Man in Black on the big screen has reached a worldwide scale, as the foreign box office has mirrored the early success of the film’s opening days on Wednesday and Thursday.
On Wednesday, France and Korea were among the first countries to view the film, with France grossing $1 million. India matched the numbers, giving it Warner Bros’ second-biggest launch ever.
Thursday, Mexico was not far behind, raking in $850,000. Other notable openings include Australia, where the picture outperformed Shazam! by 80% with a Thursday opening of $750K.
In light of the film’s release in other important markets, such as the United Kingdom, the early numbers indicate a great start for the film.
Following Thursday screenings, a substantial $7.6 million was earned at the domestic box office, reflecting the film’s success on home soil.
The picture is Johnson’s biggest release to date, with spectators anxiously anticipating the wrestling champion-turned-Hollywood star’s performance as the vicious anti-hero.
Given his brash (and homicidal) character, Teth-Adam represents a revolutionary addition to the DCEU. The 5,000-year sentence he receives is a result of his unrestrained disregard for justice.
Black Adam’s brutality was so apparent that the Motion Picture Association almost gave it a R rating, which would have alienated a substantial number of moviegoers. After four rounds, a PG-13 rating was finally assigned.
Black Adam is somewhat emblematic of a new era for the DCEU, as part of the “10-year plan” that has generated countless headlines.
Johnson has emphasized that it took fifteen years to bring the film to theatres. In an Instagram post released earlier this week, the celebrity described the “years of fighting” he endured to make it happen.
“15 hard years of fighting to make this passion project a reality,” he added.
“Years of studio execs saying ‘is there any other DC superheroes you want to play INSTEAD of Black Adam?’ My answer was always no.” My reply was invariably negative.” The actor went on to describe the impression the character had on him as a child.
“When I was a little boy the one thing that drew me to Teth Adam when I saw my first Black Adam comic…he was a hero of color. That mattered to me then as it matters to me now. Kids of ALL colors around the world will now be able to see themselves in Black Adam.”
Time will tell if the box office agrees with the title character’s assessment that the epic was worth the fight. Black Adam is currently in theatres.
