Kurt Johnstad will write screenplay for Prophet

Kurt Johnstad has been hired to write the script for Prophet. The film will star Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role and be directed by Sam Hargraves, who previously directed Extraction.

The feature-length adaptation of the same-titled comic book series by Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld.

According to the sources, Johnstad will serve as the primary writer on the project. The film will be based on the character John Prophet, who was created by Rob Liefeld in the pages of the Youngblood comics in the early 1990s, following his departure from Marvel to found Image Comics.

The character would eventually become one of the most popular superheroes in the Youngblood series.

In the comics, Prophet is drafted into the German Army after the conclusion of World War II and acquires superhuman strength and skills through a series of time-traveling doctor experiments.

However, the plot of the planned film appears to diverge slightly from Liefeld’s account. Prophet continues to volunteer for German experiments after being buried by Allied bombing and locked underground for twenty years.

In 1965, he awakens to “a world that has changed without him.” He must attempt to regain his daughter’s affection while evading KGB agents who want to exploit his blood to make super soldiers.

Mark Guggenheim, famed for his work on The CW’s Arrowverse television series, penned the original script for the picture, but it appears he is no longer associated with the production.

Instead, Johnstad will now assume the role of screenwriter; however, it is unknown if he is writing a brand-new screenplay from scratch or if he will adapt Guggenheim’s original script.

He is well recognized for his collaborations with Zack Snyder, including the screenplays for 300 and 300: Rise of an Empire. Johnstad also penned the screenplays for films including Act of Valor and Atomic Blonde, for which he served as executive producer.

Johnstad will also reunite with Snyder as writer and executive producer on the next science fiction epic Rebel Moon.

Hargraves is planned to direct Prophet for the production company Studio 8, with Jeff Robinov and John Graham serving as producers.

In addition to Adrian Askarieh of Prime Universe Films, John Schoenfelder and Russel Ackerman also serve as producers.

Additionally, Gyllenhaal, Liefeld, and Brooklyn Weaver will be credited as producers. No more cast members have been disclosed beyond Gyllenhaal.

Given that the film appears to be in its earliest phases of pre-production, there is no release date for Prophet, but it is likely to be several years away. The Rob Liefeld interview with Collider can be read here;
