The room is named after Tsar Nicholas I of Russia, who came to the United States in 1844. It is usually used to host ambassadors and other guests.

The room is on the ground floor. The Queen didn’t use it to meet with the new prime ministers because she wanted to do it somewhere more private.

A political historian by the name of Dr. Nigel Fletcher told the media: “His Majesty chose the 1844 room for the meeting instead of the late Queen’s audience room on the first floor.”
