‘The Island’ movie will star Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara

‘The Island’, the upcoming feature film by Polish director Pawel Pawlikowski, stars Academy Award winner Joaquin Phoenix and actress Rooney Mara.

The Island is already slated to start production at some point in 2023, even though Phoenix’s subsequent movie Joker: Folie à Deux is expected to start shooting next month.

The Island, a film allegedly written and directed by Pawlikowski, is about an American couple who are disillusioned with their 1930s culture.

Based on actual events, Pawlikowski’s screenplay follows these two people as they flee civilization for a remote island where they plan to create a private paradise and, in essence, live off the grid.

A European Countess is drawn to the two lovers after their private escapades become a public sensation when a millionaire’s yacht passes by.

According to the synopsis, the Countess and her two strange lovers have plans to develop a luxurious hotel on the island, endangering the calm utopia the couple has created for themselves.

When boundaries are formed, “[p]sychological warfare ensues as seduction and jealousy descend into sexual infidelity, betrayal, and eventually murder—at exactly the same time, nature itself turns against these island interlopers,” according to the book.

The movie’s sales will begin in November with FilmNation Entertainment, according to CEO Glen Basner “Pawel Pawlikowski is one of the world’s greatest filmmakers working today. Pawel bringing this story of jealousy, betrayal, and murder in a Garden of Eden is exactly what we all need to drive audiences back to the cinema.”

In terms of going back to the movies, the same is true for Pawlikowski, whose most recent production was the 2018 Polish historical drama Cold War, which had its world debut at Cannes and garnered him three Oscar nominations in addition to the best director prize.

Other notable feature film credits for the director include My Summer of Love, The Woman in the Fifth, and the acclaimed Ida, all of which he wrote and directed.

The two actors will reunite in the upcoming movie The Island for the first time since the historical drama Mary Magdalene in 2018, albeit their specific roles have not yet been made public.

Phoenix was most recognised for his work in movies like Gladiator, Walk the Line, and Her before his awe-inspiring performance for Todd Phillips’ Joker, which won him an Oscar and encouraged Emmy-winner Brendan Gleeson to join the sequel.

In David Fincher’s version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Carol, and A Ghost Story, Mara is best known for playing Lisbeth Salander.

The Island has no set release date, but we will keep you updated as new information becomes available.
