The Riddle is of course the fictional villain who tested Bruce Wayne’s cunning by committing crimes throughout Gotham City and leaving behind puzzles that led to his next victim.

The six-issue bimonthly limited DC Black Label comic book series, which tells the spin-off origin narrative, was written by Dano and the comic’s illustrator Stevan Subic.

The narrative revolves on a youthful Edward Nashton’s journey toward becoming one of Batman’s most formidable adversaries.

An actor must get involved, thoroughly research the character’s past, and comprehend how the character came to be in order to play the role to the best of their ability.

Some characters’ histories are so rich that the creator feels compelled to go above and above and share that background information with the world.

Paul Dano revealed in March that he would write a comic book titled The Riddler: Year One to examine the history of The Batman’s adversary.

DC Comics published a video featuring Matt Reeves, the director of The Batman, and Dano to commemorate the publication of the first issue.

In the video, Dano explains that they had many discussions concerning the Riddler’s origin narrative (Reeves and Peter Craig co-wrote the film’s script), and that the director was quite impressed with Dano’s research into the character.

Dano discussed his solitary upbringing and being inside the villain’s head in the video:

“To really geek out about Batman and the history… it just really gripped me. The idea here was to enter the comic in a really subjective way, so a lot of this is about somebody like Edward Nashton and what is going on inside his head.

And I always felt like the only positive affirmation Edward Nashton has ever gotten in his entire life was from solving riddles or playing games.”

Another highly read DC comic book set in the same universe as The Riddler: Year One is: Batman: Year One, written by Frank Miller (Sin City) and published in 1986, recreated Bruce Wayne’s origin narrative and rose to fame as one of the most well-known superhero tales. It served as the basis for Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins.
