The show must go on. The Broadway Rising feature documentary, which Amy Rice directed, now has an official trailer.

The trailer gives viewers a taste of the effect that the COVID-19 closure had on the Broadway community when all productions were forced to shut down and how companies managed to reopen by being tenacious and resolute.

The impact of a Broadway closure that no one anticipated is highlighted in the teaser for the new documentary.

The spectators are immediately made aware of the deep affinity that people have for Broadway, especially Ginna Claire Mason, who portrayed Glinda in Wicked. Before the curtain closes, Mason explains, “Doing something eight times a week, it’s your entire existence being in theatre, practically.”

We see that this is exactly what happened during the COVID-19 pandemic when theatres were closed on March 12, 2020, after a part-time usher tested positive for the virus. No one could have predicted that Broadway would ever shut down because, as one participant in the film says, “cancelling a show is unheard of.”

“I was hospitalized for a week. By the time I came out of that, my business had been shut down, my industry had gone away,” the trailer quotes John Kristiansen, a Broadway costume designer from New York.

His tale is swiftly followed by glimpses of other men and women who have lost their enterprises and jobs as a result of the strike, which resulted in over 96,000 people losing their jobs across the entire industry, including directors, painters, cleaners, artisans, prop masters, ushers, doormen, and embroiderers.

What should we do, exactly? One voice in the trailer states, “We’ve been trying to keep the doors open until Broadway returns.

The passion of the industry to giving back to thearers will also be highlighted in the documentary. The trailer suggests the return to the stage on September 14, 2021, was only made possible with everyone’s perseverance in spite of fewer time constraints and spending money they simply don’t have.

The Tony Award-winning theatre producer Kevin McCollum adds, “It doesn’t feel nice, but someone has to do it. In fact, we get a peek of the success made possible by their sacrifices when we watch numerous members of the production team enjoying the Broadway reopening.

Featuring stories from Mason, McCollum, Kristiansen, Jewelle Blackman, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Adam Perry, Robbie Fairchild, Lynn Nottage, Brian Blythe, T. Oliver Reid, and Tom Kirdahy, the ninety-three-minute feature documentary is directed by Rice.

Along with Rice, Sam Bisbee (Park Pictures), Christopher Cowan (STATION 10), and Tony Award winners Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family) and Justin Mikita (Oklahoma!) are producers under their A Kid Named Beckett Productions (World of Ha and XTR). After having its international premiere on June 13 at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival, the movie will be released in December of this year.
