Filming on The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, the precursor to The Hunger Games, is now complete. On Twitter, Rachel Zegler noted the achievement in the production. I have loved every second and that’s a wrap, the actor captioned photos he posted from the film’s set. This year in June, filming commenced in Berlin, Germany.

Francis Lawrence, who has directed several Hunger Games films, is in charge of this one. Michael Arndt and Michael Lesslie wrote the script, which is based on a book series by Suzanne Collins. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which takes place around 64 years before The Hunger Games, centers on Coriolanus Snow, better known to original trilogy readers as President Snow, as he gets ready to guide District 12’s female tribute, Lucy Gray Baird. Coriolanus is initially embarrassed and disappointed, but he quickly comes to believe that he and Lucy Gray may be able to change the odds in their favour.

Donald Sutherland, who previously played the older President Snow in the previous films, is replaced by Tom Blyth as Coriolanus Snow. In addition to Ziegler, who plays his student Lucy Gray Baird, the film also stars Hunter Schafer as Tigris Snow, Jason Schwartzman as Lucretius “Lucky” Flickerman, Peter Dinklage as Casca Highbottom, Viola Davis as Dr. Volumnia Gaul, Burn Gorman as Commander Hoff, and Fionnula Flanagan as Coriolanus Snow’s strict grandmother, Grandma’am. Isobel Jesper Jones, Dakota Shapiro, Vaughan Reilly, George Somner, Carl Spencer, Scott Folan, and other actors also make appearances.

With a total worldwide revenue of $2.97 billion for the trilogy, The Hunger Games franchise is among the highest-grossing movie series of all time. As Lionsgate looks to add another gem to their collection of lucrative franchises, which already includes titles like The Hunger Games and the Keanu Reeves-led action thriller franchise John Wick, fans are anticipating the same excitement, action, and mythos that were invoked in the original movies.

On November 17, 2023, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is expected to hit theatres. You can view Zegler’s tweet as well as the teaser and plot summary for the prequel by clicking here.

“Years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird, the girl tribute from impoverished District 12. But, after Lucy Gray commands all of Panem’s attention by defiantly singing during the reaping ceremony, Snow thinks he might be able to turn the odds in their favor. Uniting their instincts for showmanship and newfound political savvy, Snow and Lucy’s race against time to survive will ultimately reveal who is a songbird, and who is a snake.”
