Season 2 of ‘Andor’ is heading to Yavin
Season 2 of Andor may be on a collision course with the events of Rogue One, but Tony Gilroy stated that Yavin is also on the second season’s schedule.
During a lengthy conversation with Steve Weintraub, Gilroy revealed a few tidbits about the series’ upcoming season that had us very excited.
In addition to announcing that Ariel Kleiman, Janus Metz, and Alonso Ruizpalacios will direct, he also revealed that his brother Dan Gilroy and Beau Willimon will return to write the upcoming season, along with Star Wars newbie Tom Bissell.
He disclosed Yavin’s existence in Season 2 during his admiration for Bissell, saying:
“Tom Bissell is really cool and really, really interesting, versatile, really good writer. But also a very, very, very big Star Wars fan, which we really wanted to make sure we had another pro because we’re going into Rogue [One], and we’re going to Yavin, and then we’re going into places where we eventually need to really weave our way back to the source. So Tom came in, and he’s been great. So he’s got some episodes too.”
With the announcement that they’ll be visiting Yavin, which originally appeared in George Lucas’ original Star Wars movie, Gilroy’s series appears to be strengthening its ties to the early, tragic days of the rebellion.
Yavin has a deep history in both the franchise’s on-screen universe and literature, offering Andor plenty of storytelling options.
Yavin 4 was the site of the Galactic Civil War, which pitted the resistance against the Empire’s dictatorial authority.
The Alliance to Restore the Republic used Yavin as their headquarters until a very catastrophic war on the planet forced the rebels to relocate to the icy world of Hoth.
The planet was also the site of the Battle of Yavin (or Battle of the Death Star, depending on who you ask), which catapulted the Rebel Alliance into a decisive victory over the Empire by destroying the Death Star and crippling their troops.
Rogue One was already a foreshadowing of these events, so it will be intriguing to see how Gilroy intends to build on Yavin’s legacy while also fleshing out this precarious moment in the galaxy’s history.
Season 2 pre-production has already begun, with Gilroy telling that the first shots will be taken on November 21.
Aside from Cassian Andor, the series has already reintroduced audiences to characters from Rogue One like as Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly), Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker), and Melishi (Duncan Pow).
While Stellan Skarsgrd appears to be returning for Season 2, the fates of Adria Arjona, Fiona Shaw, Kyle Soller, Denise Gough, Elizabeth Dulau, Faye Marsay, and Varada Sethu are unknown.
