Angelina Jolie and Daughter Zahara Meet With Lawmakers to Advocate for Crime Victim Legislation
Angelina Jolie and daughter Zahara Jolie-Pitt met with senators to campaign for the Justice for All Reauthorization Act of 2022, which protects crime victims.
The proposal intends to improve forensic science, remove the rape kit backlog, and address racial inequities in wrongful convictions in America’s criminal justice system.
Jolie and her daughter met with members of Congress and the White House to discuss a new component in the law that would give crime victims access to crime records and abuse proof.
“There’s no way in the federal government that gives crime victims access to their own information,” Jolie told MPs.
Continued: “This is nationwide. Survivors require crime reports to argue for health and trauma therapy and safety protections in family court.”
Jolie said “all families should have access to these documents.”
The Oscar winner and her daughter met with bill sponsor Patrick Leahy and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
The source said the actress met with White House Gender Policy Council members about legislative goals before this week’s unveiling of the U.S. Strategy to Prevent and Respond to Gender-Based Violence. She also attended Tuesday’s signing of the Respect for Marriage Act.
Zahara joined her mom on prior trips to D.C. to fight for the Violence Against Women Act.
Jolie has advocated in Washington for the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act and the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act as part of her decades-long global advocacy for children and families.
