“Avatar: The Way of Water” movie to cross $1.5 billion: report
The Way of Water is a sequel to James Cameron's highest-grossing movie...
“Avatar: The Way of Water” surpasses $855 million worldwide
James Cameron’s eagerly awaited sequel ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ has gained significant momentum since its December 15 release. It established the tone for its box office performance by bringing in an astonishing $435 million over its opening weekend worldwide.
The movie was expected to dominate the Christmas box office and run unopposed throughout the holiday season. Variety has discovered that The Way of Water has surpassed $855.4 million at the global box office, continuing the streak of successes.
Avatar: The Way of Water earned $56 million locally in its second weekend from 4,202 theatres. The film’s domestic box office struggled as poor weather over the Christmas holiday reduced moviegoer attendance.
Its $56 million profit is a 58% decline from its domestic debut result. While still playing in theatres, this year’s other much awaited sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, experienced a 63% dip in domestic ticket sales for its second weekend.
Avatar: The Way of Water is expected to earn $82 million through Monday for its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to $278 million.
The Way of Water has made $601 million worldwide. While reaching the $600 million mark is a tremendous accomplishment for any movie, the sequel’s performance has fallen short of expectations despite securing the much sought-after and frequently unachievable Chinese release.
Despite the country’s excitement for the movie, China is currently dealing with a new wave of COVID cases, which is causing theatre closures and a corresponding drop in attendance, which has a substantial impact on the sizeable earnings Avatar 2 was anticipated to make in the Chinese market.
It isn’t doing too terribly for itself, either; with a global total of $855.4 million, it ranks as the fifth highest-grossing movie of 2022.
By the end of the year, it is anticipated to surpass the $1 billion threshold. By accomplishing so, it would join the only other two movies to have made over $1 billion this year, Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World: Dominion.
The 13-year-old sequel faces an enormous challenge because its renowned predecessor, 2009’s Avatar, presently holds the record for the most money made at the box office with nearly $2.9 billion.
The Way of Water must surpass Avatar’s lifetime earnings in order to be deemed a success; according to Cameron, it must “be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history” in order to break even.
It’s crucial to remember that Avatar had several re-releases throughout the years, including one earlier this year that helped the movie reach that $2.9 billion milestone.
In addition to an exciting return to Pandora, Avatar: The Way of Water featured appearances by Sigourney Weaver, Sam Worthington, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, CCH Pounder, Jermaine Clement, Britain Dalton, James Flatters, Bailey Bass, Jack Champion, and more.
The star-studded event and Cameron’s return to the director’s chair increased the already high level of interest in the sequel. It is safe to assume that The Way of Water fulfilled its promise of spectacle and box office dominance given its box office haul and favorable reviews.
