 Charles Kelley written and produced the song, 41, in collaboration with his bandmate Dave Haywood and Jimmy Robbins after the country singer made a public vow to quit drinking and seek treatment for his alcoholism.

The artist added in a statement announcing the release of his song, “For me, the biggest word I’ve been clinging onto is thankfulness, not pride.

I’m appreciative, he continued. “I’m beginning to connect with what life is all about as I finally glimpse the light. Even though there are difficult days, the most of the time is good. There is some beauty in all of this, and I’ve had time to think things over, improve my health, and write. This fall, I’ve probably written 50 songs, and I feel like every one of them was building up to this one.”

Hillary Scott, another member of Lady A, in addition to Haywood, 40, gave her their entire support for the brand-new song. “Similar to what she was able to accomplish with “Thy Will,” Hillary in particular believed that it was crucial for me to share my story. A demo of “As Far as You Could” was posted by Kelley on Instagram last month. She captioned the photo, stating, “This song was really therapeutic to create and I hope it can meet someone where they are.

The song’s lyrics detail Kelley’s battles with alcohol, from how much he needed it to perform to how it gave him “courage” the night he met Cassie. In his song, he sings, “You helped me make her laugh/’Til you helped me make her cry.” You were a friend at first, but you changed.

As Kelley sings: “‘Cause you took me high/You put up a strong fight/But see who’s standing now/Had to almost lose it all before I understood,” the song ends with an apparent victory over his addiction. Ward, Kelley’s 6-year-old kid, and Cassie, his wife of 2009, later celebrated her husband’s new song in an Instagram Story.
