Prince Harry, Meghan Markle loses hope for ‘apology’ from royals
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry‘s decision to leave the royal family was swiftly followed by a meeting with the family’s most senior members to “talk things through.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced their intention to stand down as senior working members of the royal family in January 2020.
“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution,” they wrote on their now-defunct Instagram. “We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honor our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages. This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity.”
Following their announcement, Queen Elizabeth II and family members held the Sandringham Summit to consider the couple’s future.
From who was present to what was said, here’s everything you need to know about the crucial summit that resulted in Harry and Meghan’s official royal departure in March 2020.
Queen Elizabeth convened a family gathering at her residence in early January 2020 to discuss the details of Meghan and Prince Harry’s royal leave. The meeting took place on Monday, January 13, 2020, at her country house in Sandringham, Norfolk, only days after Meghan and Prince Harry announced their desire to step aside on January 8, 2020.
According to palace sources, the Queen summoned Prince Harry, Prince William, and the then-Prince Charles to her rural estate to “discuss things through.” While Meghan was thought to have called in from Canada, Buckingham Palace later stated in a statement that she and Harry decided it “wasn’t necessary” for her to do so.
It was the first time they had all met since the Remembrance Day weekend in November 2019.
