‘Freeridge’ first images introduces brand-new core four
The first pictures of Freeridge reveal a brand-new core four. The four pals Gloria, Ines, Cam, and Demi are poised for new coming-of-age experiences on the streamer, and Netflix’s first look at the On My Block spinoff presents the primary cast of Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Bryana Salaz, Tenzing Norgay Trainor, and Ciara Riley Wilson as the four friends.
Along with the photos, Netflix also disclosed that the series will premiere on February 2, 2023, signaling a little earlier return to Freeridge than originally anticipated.
Freeridge brings the new friend group in for their own experience in the neighborhood in order to build on the success of On My Block, which addressed the difficult issues that young people of color trapped in unsafe neighborhoods can face at the most crucial times in their lives while still weaving in heartwarming comedy.
However, the spinoff contains a tinge of the paranormal as rival siblings Gloria and Ines and their friends Cam and Demi may or may not have released a curse bringing bad luck into their lives.
There are little specifics about what will happen in the upcoming season, although it seems to be a slight departure from the parent series’ realistic setting.
In majority of the pictures, the four friends are in the foreground as they go about their daily lives. This group has a peculiar aura that comes through as they eat lunch together, appear to be summoned to the principal’s office, and possibly handle a cursed artefact.
In one picture, Cam is holding a wooden box with two Ms on top while donning latex gloves. Given its enigmatic nature, it’s probable that this is the identical box that the young pals use to cast the curse.
Others depict the people they will see along the journey, including some familiar characters from the first season, including Paula Garcés and Eric Gutierrez.
Peggy Blow, a series regular in the spinoff, will also make a comeback in Freeridge. Eme Ikwuakor and Raushanah Simmons, who once again play the Turners, round up the returning cast members.
Along with Jamie Uyeshiro, Eddie Gonzalez, Jeremy Haft, and Jamie Dooner, creator, showrunner, and executive producer Lauren Iungerich from the original series also returns.
Iungerich is careful about how she wants her new cast to come across in the spinoff series because of how adored the original On My Block core four were and the passion that went into that series.
She told Tudum that it was important to distinguish this new set of pals as more than just the replacement for Monse, Ruby, Jamal, and Cesar:
“…the new core four of Freeridge don’t step into the shoes of our original [On My Block] crew. They step into their own shoes, right alongside the legacy of the kids who came before them. Through the lens of this new group of friends, we’ll see Freeridge as we know it and also explore a Freeridge we haven’t seen before.”
On February 2, fans can return to Freeridge for fresh adventures. Below are more of the initial pictures in the series:
