James Corden could have gone in many other directions with respect to his career.

The host of the Late Late Show said on Tuesday’s episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he once “auditioned for Lord of the Rings” along with “every single person in London.” This was one of his first film tryouts.

“I tried out for Samwise Gamgee,” said Corden, 44, referring to the role of the hobbit that went to Sean Astin.

“Mr. Frodo!” I said with the accent and everything.

Corden said that his audition wasn’t good and went on to say that he and two friends also tried out and “got all called back the next day” and the day after that.

But, he said with a laugh, “none of us got called back after that.” He also said that he “very much enjoys” the Lord of the Rings movies now, without any hard feelings.
