Neil Gaiman assures fans, ‘Sandman’ 02 is safe amidst issues

Neil Gaiman, announced that Season 2 of the critically acclaimed television adaptation of his comic book series will go ahead, The Sandman community is breathing a sigh of relief after its creator’s announcement.

According to an earlier reports, David Zaslav, the head of Warner Bros. Discovery, has been ‘railing against’ the payment terms owed to Netflix for the production of television series for the streaming service.

The debate resurfaced after the long-awaited renewal of The Sandman for a second season following a successful debut.

Zaslav was said to be dissatisfied with the way the deals with Netflix were structured, which was thought to be jeopardizing the series’ future due to the payment terms being paid over the course of 18 to 24 months, but as reports, this is not a new development, as Netflix began these payment terms years ago.

Having recently taken over Warner Bros. Television, Zaslav is now in charge of not only The Sandman, but also other popular Netflix shows like Sweet Tooth, You, and Manifest, which was saved from cancellation after Netflix picked it up from NBC.

Gaiman addressed the report’s potential confusion, stating that any wrangling over Season 2 production had already been resolved. “Sandman Season 2 has been commissioned by a Netflix and is real. Whatever behind the scenes wrangling and negotiating needed to happen to make this a reality has already occurred,” Gaiman stated on his Twitter page.

The first season of The Sandman had a sizable budget, as one would expect from a fantasy series of this scale. However, it was a huge success with viewers, with over 200 million watch hours in the first ten days alone.

Despite this, Netflix took three months to approve a renewal for the show, which was thought to be a foregone conclusion given its popularity.

Gaiman previously commented on the show’s status, stating that Netflix was waiting for viewer engagement figures to be better understood before considering a potential second season. Fears were justified, given Netflix’s penchant for cancelling beloved series in their prime.

The Sandman debuted on Netflix on August 5, 2022, to acclaim from both fans of Gaiman’s comic series and critics.

The original series was based on Gaiman’s fantasy series, which ran from 1989 to 1996. It stars Tom Sturridge as Morpheus/Dream, the embodiment of both dreams and nightmares, Patton Oswalt as Matthew the Raven, Boyd Holbrook as Corinthian, and Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne.
