Thursday afternoon, the Prince and Princess of Wales, both 40, visited Boston Harbor. After learning about Boston’s climate innovation at Greentown Labs, students viewed the city’s shifting waterfront due to increasing sea levels.

The pair wore scarves and wool jackets for the 35-degree outside visit. Hosted by Mayor Michelle Wu, the pair learned about Boston’s waterfront from Boston Harbor Now, Stone Living Lab, the Trustees of Reservations, and The Harbor Guardians. They also talked with neighborhood members about floods and storm surges and climate change mitigation measures in East Boston.

Kate and Prince William’s visit coincided with Boston Harbor Now’s Stone Living Lab announcing a cooperation with Earthshot Prize 2021 finalist Living Seawalls.

Living Seawalls creates panels that resemble natural habitats like rock pools and mangrove roots to encourage marine biodiversity. Living Seawalls will design, produce, and install these panels in Boston Harbor over the next several months.

Kate and Prince William’s three-day journey to the U.S. will finish with Friday’s Earthshot Prize Awards event. Five finalists will win there. They’ll each get $1 million to grow and accelerate their projects, plus Earthshot network assistance.
