Top Gun: Maverick‘ by Paramount is now the ninth-highest grossing IMAX film of all time, with $110.3 million worldwide.

Maverick was recently re-released in (mostly large-format) domestic theatres, possibly in an attempt to push it past the $1.5 billion mark at the global box office as it enters awards season with a lot of buzz.

The film was intended to be seen on a big screen, as evidenced by its stunning IMAX photography, which drew audiences back to theatres for multiple viewings.

The film has grossed over $718 million domestically, with an additional $770 million from overseas territories, and stars Tom Cruise as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a role he first played in the beloved original Top Gun.

It is currently the fifth-largest domestic box office film of all time, trailing only Avatar ($785 million), Spider-Man: No Way Home ($814 million), Avengers: Endgame (858 million), and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936 million). Globally, the film is ranked 11th, trailing only Furious 7 ($1.514 billion).

Maverick dominated the domestic box office for several weeks following its $160 million Memorial Day weekend debut earlier this year, topping what has been a massively successful 2022 for the recently-struggling Paramount.

With six theatrical hits this year, the studio has made a remarkable comeback after a couple of troubling years.

This year, in addition to Maverick, Paramount released Smile, Scream, Jackass Forever, The Lost City, and Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Maverick, which was released 36 years after the original film, directed by the late Tony Scott, broke multiple box office records while also receiving critical acclaim.

The National Board of Review recently named it the year’s best film, and the American Film Institute named it one of the ten best films of 2022.

Maverick is also heavily favoured to win Best Picture (presumably alongside several other nominations) at the upcoming Academy Awards.

Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Monica Barbaro, Manny Jacinto, and Val Kilmer star in the film, which is directed by Joseph Kosinski.

You can read the official synopsis for the film down below.

“Test pilot Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Cruise) has purposely dodged an advancement in rank after thirty years of service. One day Maverick is called to be put in charge of training a group of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission under the orders of his fellow naval aviator friend and former rival, Tom “Iceman” Kazansky (Kilmer), who is the commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Among them is Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Teller), the son of Maverick’s late best friend Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (Edwards).”
