Violent Night‘, Universal’s Christmas-themed action-comedy, is capitalising on the calm before the storm, finishing second in its second weekend of release.

The film is currently playing in over 3,700 theatres across the country and is expected to gross $8.7 million in its second weekend.

Violent Night grossed $2.4 million on Friday, $3.8 million on Saturday, and an estimated $2.3 million on Sunday.

The film’s domestic total is now $26.6 million, with a reported budget of $20 million. The film has earned more than $30 million worldwide.

The film received a solid B+ CinemaScore from opening-day audiences, which should keep it chugging along at the box office until it hits digital, where it may find an even larger audience.

Violent Night, best described as Die Hard with Santa Claus, has all the makings of not only a new cult hit, but also a holiday classic.

Marco Vito Oddo praised the film’s darkly comedic tone in his review, writing, “Despite an uneven rhythm caused by its mix of ultraviolence and sentimental Christmas messages, Violent Night is still a solid holiday flick with the potential to spawn a new franchise.”

The film, directed by Tommy Wirkola and starring David Harbour as a Viking-inspired Santa Claus, was released in the middle of two Disney blockbusters: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Avatar: The Way of Water.

While most studios chose to sit out this period, correctly anticipating a washout beginning December 16, Universal’s clever decision to release a counter-programmer is similar to what the studio accomplished in October by releasing the romantic comedy Ticket to Paradise alongside the superhero spectacle Black Adam.

Violent Night also stars John Leguizamo (John Wick) as the mercenaries’ leader, Scrooge; Alex Hassell (Cowboy Bebop) as Jason Lightstone; Alexis Louder (The Tomorrow War) as Jason’s estranged wife, Linda; and Leah Brady (The Umbrella Academy) as their daughter, Trudy, who forms a heartfelt bond with Santa and provides him with vital assistance as he attempts to dispatch the intruder Alva Lightstone is played by Edi Patterson (The Righteous Gemstones), Morgan Lightstone is played by Cam Gigandet (Without Remorse), and Gertrude, the imperious Lightstone matriarch, is played by Beverly D’Angelo (National Lampoon’s Vacation franchise).

You can read the official synopsis of the film below:

“When a team of mercenaries breaks into a wealthy Lightstone family compound on Christmas Eve, taking everyone inside hostage, the team isn’t prepared for a surprise combatant: Santa Claus (David Harbour, Black Widow, Stranger Things series) is on the grounds, and he’s about to show why this Nick is no saint.”
