Brooke Shields explained why she came forward publicly about being sexually assaulted when she was just 20 years old. It has taken me many years of treatment for me to even be able to talk about it, Brooke said in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“I absolutely worked very hard through it, and I have learned to digest it,” Brooke concluded. And I have reached a point—and our culture has reached a point—where we can discuss these issues much more openly. I did not anticipate saying it.

The Blue Lagoon actress explained how being a parent forced her to talk about her sexual assault experience. The 57-year-old model said, “I thought, I have come to this place, and I believe as a mother of two little girls that I hope that just by even hearing my story that I can join myself to becoming an advocate.” Because it should not be happening, she added, “But it does happen every day.”

Brooke thought she had “arrived to a place where I could talk about it” when she decided to discuss her tragedy. I hoped that by sharing the experience and the tale, it might at least help other men and women who might be struggling or trying to survive.
