Brooke Shields explains why she speaks about her rape
Brooke Shields, who details the rape for the first time, claims in the documentary that she was trying to break back into Hollywood after graduating from Princeton and had dinner with a man she knew to discuss potential projects. The unidentified man allegedly persuaded her to return to his hotel after that and promised to call her a cab to take her home.
She claimed, pointing out that he had a set of binoculars she picked up and was observing volleyball players out the window when he returned to the room naked. “I go up to the hotel room, and he vanishes for a bit,” she said. “I put the binoculars down and he’s right on me. Just like, was wrestling,” she said, explaining that she didn’t fight out of fear. “I was afraid I’d get choked out or something.”
So, I did not fight that much, the “Blue Lagoon” actress continued. Not me. I froze to the bone. I just thought, “Stay alive and get out,” and I blocked it out because I felt that one “No” should have been plenty.
God knows I was able to separate from my body. I had worked on that. Shields, 57, claimed that after it was finished, she took the elevator down, hailed a cab, and “cried all the way to my friend’s place.” Shields claimed she put the guilt for the attack on herself for a long time since she took a long time to realize that she had been raped. “I wanted to leave everything behind and continue along the path I was already on. The system has never once intervened on my behalf. I had to simply get stronger on my own.
Shields, who is married to Chris Henchy and has two daughters, has long talked about experiencing sexual harassment in Hollywood since she acted in the 1978 movie “Pretty Baby,” which bears her name, with Keith Carradine, 29, when she was just 11 years old. Shields said in an interview with Drew Barrymore last year, “But I just behaved and just smiled,” adding that she “felt so taken advantage of in so many ways.”
